For more than 20 years, Mount Tamalpais College (formerly the Prison University Project) has provided support and guidance for higher education in prison programs across the United States.
Alliance for Higher Education in Prisons. The College helped organize the National Conference for Higher Education in Prisons (NCHEP) in Chicago in 2010 and participated in the eventual founding of the Alliance for Higher Education in Prisons (AHEP).
Guide for Higher Education in Prisons. In partnership with fellow practitioners Mary Gould and Tanya Erzen, College President Jody Lewen co-authored Equity and Excellence in Practice: A Guide for Higher Education in Prison. This guide provides emerging practitioners and supporters of the field with a clear and specific summary of essential components of high-quality in-prison college programs.
Training for Emerging Programs in California Community Colleges. Starting in 2015, California Senate Bill 1391 authorized public community colleges to receive apportionment funding for courses in prisons and jails. As new programs opened across the state, Mount Tamalpais College partnered with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office to host a series of training and networking opportunities.
